GIZ adapts its structure in Afghanistan
From 2025, GIZ will implement projects in Afghanistan exclusively through non-governmental organisations.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is restructuring its work in Afghanistan: from 2025, it will implement projects exclusively through non-governmental organisations (NGOs). In doing so, GIZ is following a decision by its commissioning party, the German Federal Government.
Work in Afghanistan will remain focused on supporting the local population with basic services. This includes improving self-sufficiency in poorer urban and rural communities, training midwives and women health professionals and supporting women entrepreneurs and women-led organisations.
Since August 2021 the situation for many people in Afghanistan has changed drastically. The population is facing hunger and poverty. People need support to cover their most basic needs.
Existing and commissioned projects are still running. From 2025, GIZ will no longer employ its own national staff in Afghanistan. Its work will be coordinated from Germany or a third country. GIZ does not work with the de facto authorities.
