The African Union: a strong partner for GIZ

The African Union is an important ally for large projects in Africa. Special Envoy Bineta Diop explains why in an interview.

The partnership that connects the African Union (AU) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a longstanding one with many different facets. Bineta Diop, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security, emphasised the importance of this cooperation in a recent interview. ‘The partnership has a great scope,’ she said, highlighting how joint efforts to promote gender equality have resulted in new laws and policies at national and regional levels, for example. ‘This demonstrates how we are working together to break down structural barriers and discriminatory practices across Africa, while creating opportunities for women.’ Protecting the climate and promoting the economy are also areas where the AU and GIZ have common goals.
