‘My knowledge in construction will be very important to rebuild Ukraine’
Viktoriia is a student in construction technology in Kyiv. In the interview, she explains why she took trainings for energy-efficient construction developed by GIZ.
For the reconstruction of buildings in Ukraine, well-insulated house walls and windows are needed that insulate well in the winter and are energy-efficient at the same time. Viktoriia is convinced that skilled workers like her are indispensable for this. At a vocational college in Kyiv, the 18-year-old Ukrainian studies building construction and is taking additional training in energy-efficient construction and renovation. She is one of around 2,400 experts and students who are being trained in the field of energy efficiency by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Ukraine on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In this interview, Viktoriia explains why knowledge of energy efficiency and climate protection is particularly important in the construction industry.
Which courses have you signed up for?
When I heard about the courses on energy-efficient construction, I decided on the one on thermal insulation materials in construction. In the practical part, for example, I learned to install windows in such a way that they insulate as best as possible and are therefore more energy-efficient for the building.
What do you want to do professionally after your apprenticeship and why?
After graduating, I plan to work as a foreman on a construction site. After the end of the war, this will be an important profession for the reconstruction of our country and will certainly be in great demand on the labour market.
Why do you think knowledge of renewable energies and energy efficiency is particularly important?
It is about Ukraine's energy independence. To this end, it is important to promote renewable energies now. But that is not enough. We have to use energy resources very efficiently. This includes rebuilding and renovating buildings in an energy-efficient manner. I learned this in the courses and used the new knowledge directly on the construction site. My profession coupled with the additional knowledge in energy and climate protection will be very important for the reconstruction of Ukraine. I am convinced of that.
About the project:
Together with universities and vocational schools, GIZ offers training and further education and thus builds knowledge in Ukraine. For the country's energy security and the green energy transition, it is crucial that there are enough skilled workers to implement them in the long term.
