Migration advice centre in Senegal successfully up and running
Since the end of January, over 550 people have obtained information from the centre in Dakar about job openings, training courses and opportunities for migrating to Germany.
There is a high unemployment rate in many countries around the world. As a result, young people in particular often regard emigration as the only way of escaping this problem. Jobs are actually often available, but there is a lack of information about employment and training opportunities on the ground.
Migration advice centres can help here: they provide information about job openings in the region and about potential employment in Germany. Support with entering the local labour market is also provided to people living abroad who wish to return to their countries of origin. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH runs a total of seven such centres on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in the Western Balkans and North and West Africa in cooperation with the national labour administration authorities.
The newest migration advice centre was opened in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, at the end of January. There has been a great deal of interest in the advice on offer: over 550 people have already obtained information in person from the Senegalese-German Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration about the opportunities available to them. Alongside individual advisory sessions, the centre also runs training courses and information events, for example at vocational training institutions.
Since 2015, over 30,000 people in total have obtained advice at the seven centres. Job fairs and information events have reached over 40,000 people, and a further 4,000 have participated in training courses on how to apply for jobs.
