Information for applicants

Every year, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH seconds more than 300 development workers to development cooperation partner organisations. We are looking for skilled and dedicated individuals from Germany and other EU member states.

Development workers are generally seconded for a period of between two and six years. To become a development worker you must:

• have completed vocational training or a university degree
• have a proven track record of at least two years in your particular field, during which time you have been able to apply and consolidate your expertise
• have a good command of the language spoken in the country of assignment
• be a citizen of Germany or another EU member state

Development workers do not work for a customary salary. They receive a maintenance allowance, along with insurance and health care benefits as well as other social security contributions for their families. Before starting an assignment, development workers – and their families – complete a thorough preparatory phase in Germany and in the partner country. Following an assignment in a partner country, we assist development workers with their social and professional reintegration in their country of origin.
