International energy policy
GIZ supports international cooperation for a global energy system transformation.
A sustainable and secure energy supply for the entire global population with energy obtained exclusively from renewable energy sources can only be achieved through international cooperation. On the basis of cross-border cooperation, international and regional institutions and initiatives formulate political goals, initiate cross-border projects and provide important forums for engaging in political dialogue and sharing experience.
On behalf of the German Federal Government, GIZ supports cross-border partnerships and advises federal ministries on their cooperation with international organisations and initiatives. At the international level, these include the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All initiative, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21). Initiatives at the European level are the European Union Energy Initiative (EUEI) and the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP). At the regional level, GIZ supports energy policy institutions and processes in the Arab world, Southeast Asia, West Africa, Central America and the Caribbean.
GIZ also supports the German Government in implementing bilateral energy partnerships with Algeria, Brazil, Chile, China, India, Jordan, Morocco, Mexico, South Africa und Tunisia. These bilateral energy partnerships are an important instrument for ongoing exchange on issues concerning energy policy and the energy sector and for achieving progress in energy system transformation.
GIZ is involved in advancing the international energy policy agenda and supports the development of strategies for a sustainable energy policy. It advises its partners on cooperation with the private sector and on organising regional and global conferences and events.
In view of the considerable international interest in the experience of German energy system transformation, GIZ also provides information on German energy policy. In doing so, it supports the global transformation of energy supply to achieve greater sustainability.
