Context

Bangladesh is one of the countries most affected by climate change and has therefore been initiating ambitious climate change policies since 2009. The focus is adaptating to climate change.

A new approach to urban development is required, particularly for secondary cities, taking into account the large number of climate-induced displaced persons. This approach is necessary to divert the huge number of climate migrants to other cities than Dhaka. Further emphasis will be put on just energy transition for climate change mitigation, and on biodiversity. As climate change has already led to substantial losses and damages in Bangladesh, the country needs financial support to combat the challenges.

The Joint Declaration of Intent of the Climate and Development Partnership (CDP) is currently in development between the governments of Germany and Bangladesh. In this partnership, the two countries plan to work together to combat climate change and implement the Paris Agreement.

Objective

The CDP has the necessary support to initiate the cooperation in the framework of the CDP between Bangladesh and Germany.

Approach

The project is implementing the following measures:

  • Establishing a political dialogue on climate change
  • Enhancing the development cooperation on climate change adaptation, sustainable urban development, the transition towards renewable energies, and protecting biodiversity
  • Supporting the establishment of exchange among relevant stakeholders such as governmental and research institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector in Bangladesh and Germany.
  • Developing at least two project proposals for development cooperation measures emerging from the CDP network.
